Planned Obsolescence – the repair/renew dilemma of a laptop
Posted By admin on January 3, 2011

There was a time when things were built to last. Unfortunately, even when spending a lot of money on a product, planned obsolescence seems to be part of the manufacturing process.
I tend to think that a $1000 laptop should last several years. While I accept that software can change and need updating, I don't expect that my computer should do so. If only it was so easy. These days even the cost for the simplest repair makes you hesitate.
A non functioning web camera and DVD can cost almost $400 to repair. Take the cost of high labor fees, and, the cost of software or hardware, and, the bill is horrendous. When you know you can get a new desktop computer for $400, it is logical to ask yourself is you really need a 2 year old laptop rather than a new desktop computer.
Computer technology changes so fast that a $400 new desktop has more memory, faster speed, and more gigabytes than a $1000 laptop purchased two years before.
Does that make sense to you?
